Cootehill mains replacement project moves to night-time works

At Uisce Éireann, we are committed to providing a secure and reliable water supply for our customers and communities. As part of this commitment, a programme of works to replace more than 350 metres of ageing cast iron water mains has been underway in the Cavan Road area of Cootehill over recent months.

The next phase of this project will require nighttime works, which began this week. The nighttime works will take place between 7pm and 7am for a period of two weeks, with completion due on Friday, 23 October.

This phase of the works is being carried out at night in order to limit the disruption caused to road users in the area. To ensure the safety of crews, road users and the general public, traffic management measures will be in place nightly for the period of the works. Local and emergency traffic will be maintained at all times.

Peter Gallagher, Uisce Éireann's Water Treatment Operations Manager, commented: “We have made good progress with this project of mains replacements since work began at the end of July. These upgrades will help to provide the residents and businesses of Cootehill with a more reliable supply of treated drinking water, and will reduce the risk of operational issues affecting the local network in the future.

“We acknowledge that nighttime works and associated traffic control measures can be disruptive, and we want to thank impacted road users for their understanding while these measures are necessary,” Peter continued.

The project is being delivered by Sean Quigley Limited on behalf of Uisce Éireann.

Previous Updates

At Uisce Éireann, we’re committed to providing a reliable water supply for everyone in the community. To help make that happen, we’re getting underway with works to replace old and damaged cast iron water mains in Cootehill, Co. Cavan.

Works have commenced this week and will involve the replacement of more than 350m of ageing water mains along the Cavan Road strengthening the local water network and helping to reduce disruption for homes and businesses.

Welcoming the project, Peter Gallagher of Uisce Éireann said that the replacement of these deteriorating water mains will improve water quality and the resilience of the network, eliminating existing leaks and reducing the amount of clean water lost into the ground.

“Every pipe we replace is guided by one clear goal: providing a water supply people can count on. These improvements make a difference every single day, in every tap, every home and throughout the community. By focusing on delivering a more reliable supply, we’re helping to build a stronger, more resilient water service for the people of Cootehill now and for generations to come,” Peter said.

The project is being delivered by Sean Quigley Limited on behalf of Uisce Éireann with completion in September.

Customers can phone Uisce Éireann on 1800 278 278 if they have any questions about the project or visit the Water Supply Updates section of our website for regular updates.

We have measures in place to keep disruption to an absolute minimum but to protect the public and our crews, a traffic management system will be in place during the works in the form of a stop / go system. Local and emergency traffic will always be maintained.

If short-term planned water disruptions are required, customers will receive at least 48 hours’ notice before any interruption.

This project is one example of how Uisce Éireann works every day to reduce leaks. With more than 65,000 km of underground pipes nationally- enough to circle the earth one and a half times - fixing leaks can be complicated. Many are hidden, but we are making progress: national leakage is now at its lowest ever, reduced from 49% in 2014 to 36%.
