What are the benefits of this project?
Once complete, this project will:
- Enhance the security and resilience of water supply for homes and businesses in the area.
- Improve the quality and reliability of the water supply area of Clonmel.
- Address ongoing operational issues that result in interruptions to the water supply and Boil Water Notices.
- Allow for Clonmel’s Poulavanogue water supply to be removed from the EPA’s Remedial Action List, which identifies “at-risk” drinking water supplies.
What is involved in this project?
This major investment to upgrade the Clonmel Water Supply will involve:
- An upgrade to the treatment facilities at Monroe Water Treatment Plant (WTP)
- The installation of 15km of new water mains
- Upgrades to Rahronan pumping station which will connect the Monroe supply to the Clonmel North Reservoir and Poulavanogue network.
The project will also provide for a more secure water supply to those currently supplied by the existing Monroe WTP from the large Clonmel North Reservoir.
Once the Monroe WTP upgrade works are complete, customers who were supplied from Poulavanogue WTP will now be supplied from Monroe WTP.

What is happening next?
Over 13km of the planned 15km pipelaying works are now completed. The remaining 2km of pipeline installation is taking place within the wayleave at Rathronan. Upgrade works at Monroe Water Treatment plant are also underway.
The works may involve some short-term water interruptions, and the project team will ensure that customers are given a minimum of 48 hours’ notice prior to any planned water interruptions. We understand that this type of work can be inconvenient and works crews will make every effort to minimise any disruption these necessary works cause.
